Chapter 12

She had a Russian sense of humor. “Faydra,” Yekaterina told her, “you need me.”

“How so?”

“You need to buy things. Yes?” Yekaterina pointed out.

“Yes,” Fay acknowledged.

“American price here in Moscow for American to buy item is double what Russian pay for same item. I wait while you do math, Miss Green.” Yekaterina added, “What did you pay for cab from airport to city?”

“One hundred twenty U.S.”

“Holy Saint Andrew’s mother!” Yekaterina exclaimed. “When you and I return to airport, we pay twenty U.S. for two.”

“Ouch! You can call me Fay, sweetie,” Fay offered.

Yekaterina smiled. “Okay, Sasha call me Katrinka, sometimes Kat. At special times, like my birthday, he calls me Velikaia Knazhna.” She thought for an instant, then added, “My papa calls you Faya. Is okay?”

“Katrinka is a beautiful name,” Fay remarked. “Do you prefer it or Kat?”

“Kat is easy to say. Is okay.”

“What does Velikaia Knazhna mean?” Fay asked.

“It is silly name. It means ‘Grand Princess’ in Russian,” Kat explained. “In English, it translates to ‘Grand Duchess.’”

Fay remarked, “I can see it in you. It’s not silly. My father called me ‘Princess’ sometimes.”

They spent the afternoon working on Kat’s English skills. It confused Kat how Fay said specific phrases. Looking at Kat’s English study notes, Fay noticed apparently, Kat had learned British English.

Fay explained to Kat, “We Americans tend to restructure sentences, so participles are not used as much.” She illustrated other idioms common to Americans, while trying to avoid slang as much as possible. Kat caught on fast.

Fay had been hesitant to visit the mall at Red Square, but Kat proved to be a good saleswoman. The mall located across the street from Kremlin had been converted from a multi-level Soviet-era administrative building. Fay found the temptation great to not buy a shopping cartload.

Fay wished she had more time to spend with her newfound friend. She promised if she would one day return to Moscow, she would meet Kat again.

On the roof of the building located across the street from the St. Regis Moscow Nikolskaya hotel, Jon Shaman and Faydra Green were waiting. They had been waiting off and on for two days for their prey to emerge from the hotel. A thermos of coffee and a flask of Russian vodka helped to keep them alert. The Mk21 sniper rifle trained on the hotel’s main entrance had a single purpose: to kill a man.

Jon manned the binoculars, Fay the rifle. To deal with the boredom associated with the waiting, the two engaged in small talk. This was the last thing in the world Fay had ever wanted to do, but it was a “him or me” scenario. Jon was the expert, yet this was not his battle to fight. Today, he would be the teacher, she the pupil.

Jon was not the kind of guy one would ask about his mother and family. He was an assassin by trade. It made little difference who employed a terminator for hire.

Yet, Fay, being terminally inquisitive by nature, felt compelled to learn something about Jon.
